He earned his medical degree from Universidad Central del Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1986. He completed an internship and a family medicine residency at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center in Chicago, and he served as chief resident. In 1990 and 1991, he directed the Family Practice Residency Program at the same hospital.
