He earned a BS in Biology from the College of William & Mary and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed his Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. He completed fellowships in Reproductive Surgery at Union Memorial Hospital of Emory University Medical School and in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at The New York Hospital at Cornell Medical Center.

He previously served as medical director of the Reproductive Medicine Center at the University of Minnesota Medical School for more than 10 years and worked as a consultant and professor with the Mayo Clinic for six years.
