Dr. Mahmoud earned her medical degree at Cairo University Faculty of Medicine and graduated with honors in 6.5 years. She completed a residency in pediatrics. She completed residency training in aerospace medicine at Wright State's Boonshoft School of Medicine through a NASA-funded combined residency and Masters program. She did her family practice internship in Pittsburgh at Allegheny Health System.

As a civilian contractor she practiced family medicine in remote places such as Elmendorf AFB in Alaska and the Reagan Missile Testing Army Base in the Marshall Islands.
