Dr. Barton earned a BA from Yale University in 1969 and an MD from Stanford Medical School in 1976. From 1971 to 1973, he worked as a respiratory therapist at US Army Tripler Hospital in Honolulu. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez from June 1976 to December 1977.

In 2017, he completed training in Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice. Dr. Barton has been a family practitioner since 1978. He practices general medicine with a holistic approach.
