About JoEllen Schimmels

Schimmels is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She has been a nurse since 1998. She served 23 years on active duty in the Army, including combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the military she worked with people facing complex mental health challenges and led system-level improvements. Schimmels is trained in cognitive behavioral therapies, including CBT for insomnia, trauma-focused CBT and suicide prevention. She is also trained in prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy and accelerated resolution therapy.

Her care is trauma-informed and evidence-based. She has served as a Clinical Professor at Emory University and a clinician at Spring Health. Her scholarship covers PTSD and anxiety therapies, psychedelic assisted therapies, tele-mental health care, trauma informed care and mental health policy.

Outside work, she enjoys piano, hiking, scuba diving, swimming, scrapbooking and karaoke.
