"Dr. Martha Kyriacou is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician graduate of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She is part of the first graduated class with COVID-19 front line experience. She completed her undergraduate at Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and has dedicated her life to healthy lifestyle and fitness.
As she completed her postgraduate medical degree at the Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Dr. Martha became fascinated with her clinical rotation in adolescent psychiatry. During her pediatric clinical rotations in residency, she found her passion in adolescent medicine. The most profound experience was an away rotation in adolescent sports medicine at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus. She counseled, treated, and educated healthy lifestyles for athletic teens at the boarding school Albergue Olímpico in Salinas, Puerto Rico.
As the only Spanish speaker in her residency class, Dr. Kyriacou provided meaningful care to a diverse and high-risk Latino patient population, who’s main language was Spanish. Additionally, her extensive clinical experience in the intensive care unit (ICU), inpatient wards and emergency departments prepared her for the final chapter of her medical training, the pandemic crisis.
As Brooklyn became the new epicenter for the COVID-19 outbreak in March, the University Hospital SUNY Downstate was assigned as a COVID-19 only hospital, directed by Gov. Cuomo. Dr. Kyriacou volunteered for redeployment to inpatient wards, ICU consults and outpatient triage task force. As a result, SUNY Downstate awarded Dr. Kyriacou with a Certificate of Courage for her life-saving efforts and commitment to her patients during the pandemic crisis."
