Calf Augmentation: What It Is and What to Expect

What kind of doctor provides Calf Augmentation?
A plastic surgeon usually performs calf augmentation. This is a doctor trained to change the shape of the body through surgery. Some orthopedic surgeons, who treat bones and joints, also do this procedure. You should look for a surgeon who is board certified and has experience with this specific surgery.
What it is
Calf augmentation is surgery that makes the lower legs look larger or more shaped. The surgeon places a soft silicone implant into a pocket inside the calf. This is a cosmetic procedure, done to change appearance rather than treat a disease.
Why a doctor might recommend it
Most people choose this surgery because their calves look thin even after years of exercise. Some were born with calves that did not develop fully, a problem doctors call a muscle deficiency. The surgery improves appearance but does not make the legs stronger.
How to prepare
- Stop smoking several weeks before surgery, because smoking slows healing.
- Ask which medicines to stop taking, since some raise bleeding risk.
- Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay the first night.
What happens during it
The surgery is usually done with general anesthesia, so you are fully asleep. Through a small cut behind the knee or on the inner side of the leg, the surgeon creates a pocket and slides the implant into place. The operation often takes one to two hours, and most people go home the same day.
Recovery
Expect soreness, swelling, and bruising for the first week or two. Most people start walking within a day or two and return to desk work within a week or two. Avoid heavy exercise for several weeks, and expect the legs to keep changing for a few months as swelling goes down.
Risks and side effects
All surgery carries risks, including bleeding, infection, and reactions to anesthesia. An implant can shift out of place, and nerves near the site can be injured, causing numbness. Some people have more visible scarring than expected. Rarely, a second surgery is needed to fix an implant problem.
Who performs it
Board certified plastic surgeons perform most calf augmentations. When you meet a surgeon, ask how many of these procedures they have done. A direct primary care doctor charges a flat monthly fee instead of billing insurance, while a concierge doctor usually costs more and often works alongside insurance. Either can review your health and handle follow up care, but they do not perform the surgery and would refer you to a plastic surgeon.
Common questions
Will the implants look natural?
Many people are happy with how their legs look after healing. The result depends on your body, the implant size, and the surgeon's skill.
How long do calf implants last?
Implants are meant to be long lasting, but they are not always permanent. Some people need a second surgery years later if an implant shifts or causes a problem.
Does the surgery hurt?
You will be asleep during the operation and feel nothing. Afterward, the legs are usually sore for one to two weeks. Your surgeon can prescribe medicine to manage the pain.
Can exercise build calves instead?
For many people, exercises like calf raises can add some muscle over time. But genetics limit how much muscle some people can build, which is why some choose surgery.
